Hermitage Vin de Paille 1999, M Chapoutier 375ml - This is a legendary sweet wine from the Rhône Valley. "Vin de Paille" means "straw wine," referring to the ancient, painstaking method of drying grapes on straw mats for months to naturally concentrate their sugars and flavors. Chapoutier's 1999 Hermitage Vin de Paille is a rare, mythical elixir made entirely from Marsanne. Now over 25 years old, it is at the peak of its profound, decadent evolution, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.

What's it Like?

Viscous and glowing with a deep golden-amber hue in the glass. The nose is a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of dried apricots, honeycomb, toasted hazelnuts, white truffle, and candied orange peel. On the palate, it is incredibly rich, syrupy, and unctuous, yet it is entirely lifted by a brilliant, laser-like acidity that prevents it from ever feeling heavy or cloying. The finish is monumental, lingering on the palate for minutes.

Perfect For

A contemplative sip at the end of a grand meal. It is a magnificent dessert in itself, but it pairs astonishingly well with intense blue cheeses like Roquefort or a classic, rich foie gras.

The Pros Agree...

Critics absolutely revere this vintage.
M. Chapoutier: The Biodynamic Pioneer of the Rhône

In the historic town of Tain-l’Hermitage, on the banks of the Rhône River, lies one of the most famous wine estates in the world: Maison M. Chapoutier. Although the family has been growing vines here since 1808, the true revolution of the estate began in 1990. That was the year a 26-year-old Michel Chapoutier took the helm. He brought with him a radical, uncompromising vision that would change the region forever.

Michel’s absolute conviction was that great wine is made in the vineyard, not in the cellar. He banished all chemicals and converted the entire estate to biodynamic farming—a daring move at a time when such practices were often dismissed. He wanted the soil to speak for itself. His passion for terroir culminated in the creation of his “Sélections Parcellaires,” legendary single-vineyard wines (like Le Pavillon or L’Ermite) that capture the microscopic differences in soil and microclimate with incredible precision.

Another unique hallmark of Chapoutier is the inclusion of Braille on every label, a practice started in 1996. This is a tribute to Maurice de la Sizeranne, the inventor of the first abbreviated version of Braille, whose family once owned a famous vineyard parcel that Chapoutier now farms. It is a symbol of inclusion and a nod to local history.

The family motto is “Fac et Spera”—”Do and hope.” It is a reminder that the winemaker must do everything possible to care for the vines, but must ultimately surrender to the forces of nature. Today, M. Chapoutier is not just a giant of the Rhône, but a global symbol of respect for the earth and uncompromising quality.

Hermitage Blanche 2007 Jean Louis Chave - This is, without question, one of the greatest and most profound white wines on Earth. From the undisputed master of the Hermitage hill, this is a rare, mature masterpiece. The 2007 vintage showcases a more elegant and aromatically complex side of this legend, and now, with nearly two decades of age, it has evolved into something magical, complex, and utterly unforgettable.

What's it Like?

This is a wine of breathtaking complexity. Imagine a huge, kaleidoscopic perfume of quince, honeyed peach, liquid rock, toasted bread, and white flowers, with an underlying scent of beeswax and lanolin. On the palate, it's a paradox of power—full-bodied and hugely concentrated, yet it feels vibrant and almost weightless. The texture is rich and oily, perfectly balanced by a powerful mineral core that leads to a massive, explosive finish that simply won't quit.

Perfect For

A monumental, 'holy grail' experience for the world's most serious wine lovers, a gastronomic pairing with Bresse chicken with truffles, or a moment of quiet contemplation to appreciate one of wine's true works of art.

The Pros Agree...

The critics have consistently called this wine a legend with near-limitless aging potential. One celebrated its “magical, mature” state, praising its “huge nose of quince, liquid rock, and toasted bread” and “vibrant and weightless texture.” Another was stunned on its release, noting its “kaleidoscopic bouquet,” “huge concentration,” and “massive finish,” predicting it would evolve for over 50 years.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave stands as a beacon of winemaking excellence in France’s Northern Rhône Valley. Today, under the stewardship of Jean-Louis Chave, the estate continues to produce some of the world’s most esteemed wines.

Historical Background

The Chave family’s association with winemaking began in 1481 when they were granted land in what is now the Saint-Joseph appellation. Following the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century, the family expanded their holdings to include vineyards on the renowned Hill of Hermitage. This strategic move solidified their presence in the Northern Rhône and laid the foundation for their future endeavors. citeturn0search4turn0search0

Winemaking Philosophy

The Chave family’s winemaking approach is deeply rooted in tradition, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the terroir to express itself fully. They practice organic viticulture, hand-harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness, and employing natural fermentation processes. This philosophy ensures that each bottle embodies the purity and authenticity of its origin.

Wine Portfolio

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is renowned for its exceptional Hermitage wines, both red and white. The red Hermitage, crafted from Syrah, is celebrated for its depth, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. The white Hermitage, a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, is equally esteemed, known for its richness, elegance, and longevity.

In addition to their flagship Hermitage wines, the Chave family produces a traditionally styled Saint-Joseph rouge from their vines in the historic center of the appellation. This wine is characterized by its round black raspberry, black olive, violet, and woodsmoke aromatics, firm underlying structure, and fine balance. citeturn0search9

The Serraiola winery is now run by the 3rd generation of the family, the two sisters Fiorella and Pamela Lenzi. Fiorella is at the front, looking after the wine and production, she embodies the winery with heart and soul. Pamela pulls the strings in the background and ensures that everything runs smoothly.

They produce wines of good character and often of significant quality. The winery’s wines are solid, well-balanced and of good quality, despite small missteps in the recent past with too much wood in the ageing process. The white wines, as is traditional for this winery, are more original and fresher, while the red wines are more predictable in terms of the grape varieties.

Fiorella Lenzi is one of a kind, a character that people in the wine scene like because she is straightforward, honest and direct, and therefore always polarising – and as a woman, no less. With her passion and patriotic commitment to the region, Fiorella has contributed enormously to the fact that the wines of the Maremma are so well known and developed today, and yet her wines are hardly known, but she as a person is.

The vineyards cover a quarter of the total area in family ownership family property, about 12 hectares. The first vineyards date back to the ‘70s. years, then they were gradually replanted with clones that are more
clones that are better suited to this part of the Maremma.

The majority of the vineyard area, 7 hectares, is planted with red grape varieties, mainly Sangiovese, but also Merlot and Syrah. The remaining 3 hectares cover the white grape varieties, some of which are somewhat experimental: Trebbiano, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Traminer, Marsanne and Roussane.

Since 1994, DOC Monteregio Massa Marittima, a somewhat newer DOC of Tuscany, which also includes the more northern zone of the Maremma, has been produced.

St Joseph blanc 2020, Gangloff

Domaine Yves Gangloff, nestled in the heart of Condrieu in the Northern Rhône Valley, is a testament to passion, artistry, and meticulous winemaking. Founded in the 1980s by Yves Gangloff and his partner Mathilde, the estate has grown from humble beginnings to become a revered name among wine enthusiasts.

Origins and Evolution

Originally from Alsace, Yves settled in the Rhône region in the 1970s, drawn by its beauty and the opportunity to assist his brother, a painter. It was here that he met Mathilde, a native of Vienne. To make ends meet, Yves took up work as a vineyard laborer, immersing himself in the viticulture of the steep slopes of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie. Their journey into winemaking began serendipitously when local winegrower Gaston André offered them a plot of vines. Initially, they sold their grapes to négociants, but in 1992, they ventured into producing and bottling their own wine. The acclaim was swift, establishing Domaine Gangloff as a beacon of quality in the region.

Vineyards and Terroir

Today, the estate encompasses approximately 8.5 hectares:

Côte-Rôtie: 3.5 hectares

Condrieu: 2.5 hectares

Saint-Joseph: 2.5 hectares

The vineyards are situated on steep, terraced hillsides with soils rich in granite and schist. These challenging terrains require meticulous handwork, reflecting the Gangloff’s dedication to their craft.

Winemaking Philosophy

Yves Gangloff’s approach to winemaking is both intuitive and minimalistic. Grapes are often destemmed and fermented using native yeasts, with minimal sulfur added. The wines are aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, allowing for complexity without overwhelming the natural expression of the fruit. This philosophy results in wines that are vibrant, expressive, and true to their terroir.

Notable Wines

Domaine Gangloff produces several distinguished wines:

Côte-Rôtie “La Barbarine”: Introduced in 1997, this wine is typically a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, sourced from younger vines and select older parcels.

Côte-Rôtie “La Sereine Noire”: Crafted from 100% old-vine Syrah, this wine showcases the depth and complexity achievable from mature vines in prime lieux-dits.

Condrieu: A white wine made from Viognier, reflecting the aromatic richness and minerality characteristic of the appellation.

Legacy and Continuation

Following Mathilde’s passing in 2011, Yves continued the domaine’s operations, later joined by their children, Loup and Elsa. The family remains committed to producing wines that honor their heritage while embracing the unique qualities of each vintage.

Domaine Yves Gangloff stands as a symbol of dedication, artistry, and the pursuit of excellence in winemaking. Their wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and the authentic expression of the Northern Rhône’s terroir.

Château de Fonsalette is one of the Rhône Valley’s best-kept secrets, a name whispered with reverence among those who know the wines of Emmanuel Reynaud—proprietor of the legendary Château Rayas. Situated just a few kilometers from the famed Rayas estate, Fonsalette may technically bear the more modest Côtes-du-Rhône appellation, but in the hands of Reynaud, it produces wines of startling beauty, grace, and longevity that often defy classification.

Acquired by Emmanuel’s grandfather, Louis Reynaud, in the mid-20th century, Fonsalette is a 120-hectare property nestled among forests, olive groves, and old-vine parcels of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc. The vineyards are cultivated with minimal intervention—no herbicides, no chemical treatments, and with painstaking care for the old vines and the complex soils of sand and clay.

Fonsalette is not part of the Louis Roederer group; instead, it stands as a sibling estate to Château Rayas and Pignan, united under Emmanuel Reynaud’s deeply personal, almost mystical approach to winemaking. The vinification at Fonsalette mirrors that of Rayas: whole-cluster fermentation, aging in ancient demi-muids, and an aversion to manipulation. The result is wines that are intensely expressive, delicate yet profound, and utterly singular.

The red Côtes-du-Rhône from Fonsalette, composed largely of old-vine Grenache and Syrah, is velvety, aromatic, and laced with spice, garrigue, and floral notes. It is one of the few Côtes-du-Rhône wines with the structure to age gracefully for decades. The rare white—comprising Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Marsanne—is hauntingly complex, with nutty, honeyed character, and the capacity to surprise even seasoned palates after years in bottle.

Due to the tiny production and cult following, Fonsalette wines are highly sought after, often allocated and rarely found on the open market. They reflect not just a place, but a philosophy—a commitment to purity, patience, and authenticity.

In the world of Rhône wine, Château de Fonsalette may wear a humble appellation, but its soul, shaped by one of France’s most enigmatic winemakers, is undeniably grand.
