Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2022, Domaine Coche-Dury: The Most Modest Masterpiece of the Greatest Estate in the Côte de Beaune

Robert Parker once called Jean-François Coche-Dury "one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth." No other estate in the Côte de Beaune — with the possible exception of Leroy and Romanée-Conti — is spoken of with such reverence. And yet: their most accessible red wine comes not from Meursault, not from Volnay, but from the modest Auxey-Duresses — a small valley west of Meursault, whose steep limestone hillsides and cool microclimate give the Pinot Noir a freshness and minerality unthinkable in warmer sites. The 2022 vintage in the Côte de Beaune was warm and sunny — one of the greatest in recent years, with ripe, intense fruit and a structure that left experts in awe. In Coche-Dury's hands, this became an Auxey-Duresses Rouge of exceptional elegance, depth and complexity — a red wine that reveals the secret of why this estate has remained unmatched for decades.

What's it Like?

In the glass, a luminous, medium ruby with violet reflections — young, vivid, expressive. The nose is seductive: ripe red cherries, raspberry, fresh strawberry, delicate violets and rose blossom, underpinned by a hint of forest floor, spice and a delicate mineral depth from the limestone terroir of Auxey-Duresses. On the palate, medium-bodied, silky and precise — the unmistakable Coche-Dury signature. The tannins are fine and fully integrated, the acidity fresh and lively, the finish long, aromatic and minerally persistent. A Pinot Noir of Burgundian purity, simultaneously accessible and profound.

The Critics Agree...

Coche-Dury is the second most searched estate in Auxey-Duresses on Wine-Searcher worldwide. The Auxey-Duresses Rouge is among the most coveted entry-level wines in all of Burgundy — not because it is inexpensive, but because it occupies a level in the estate's quality hierarchy that no other producer can offer at this tier. Connoisseurs describe it as "subtle and delicate, perfect for extended cellaring" — carrying the same signature as the estate's great Premier Crus.

Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2022, Domaine Coche-Dury

Domaine Coche-Dury: The Estate That Needs No Explanation — and Deserves One Anyway

There are estates in Burgundy that are great because their terroirs are great. And then there is Domaine Coche-Dury — an estate that makes its terroirs great.

Jasper Morris, one of the world’s foremost Burgundy experts, put it perfectly: “You might expect to be able to put a finger on why the wines are so good. Are the yields low? Not exceptionally. Is there some wizardry during the vinification or élevage? Sometimes I think it is just that Jean-François Coche-Dury has green fingers.”

The Marriage That Created a Legend

The story of Coche-Dury begins in 1973 — with a marriage. Jean-François Coche, son of an old winemaking family from Meursault, marries Odile Dury. The Dury family brings vineyards. The Coche family brings generations of winemaking knowledge. Together, they create an estate that on paper appears modest — 9 hectares spread across six communes — and in the bottle is incomprehensibly great.

Robert Parker discovered the estate in the late 1980s and was immediately staggered. His evaluations of the Meursault Perrières and the Corton-Charlemagne set new standards. Within a few years, Coche-Dury was known worldwide — and the bottles were rarer than ever.

Jean-François: The Winemaker with Green Fingers

Jean-François Coche-Dury is not a theorist. He is a farmer — in the best sense of the word. He spent decades understanding every metre of his vineyards: which soil gives what to which vine, how each selection responds, how much sun each slope receives. No clones planted — a rarity in Burgundy, where most producers long ago switched to selected clones. Massal selections that preserve the genetic diversity of the old vines.

In the cellar: long fermentation in oak barrels with spontaneous yeasts, frequent battonage, 15 to 22 months of ageing, no filtration. The proportion of new oak varies — up to 50% for the great whites in certain years — but always deployed so that the wood serves rather than dominates.

Raphaël: The Second Generation Without Fear

In 2010, Jean-François handed the estate to his son Raphaël — a winemaker who grew up in his father’s vineyards and knows the most difficult task in the wine world: taking on a perfect legacy.

Raphaël has not tried to copy his father or surpass him. He has continued the estate with the same principles — respect for the terroir, patience in the cellar, precision in every decision — but with his own, modern sensibility. Connoisseurs are unanimous: Raphaël has maintained the level. Some say he has even slightly raised it.

Auxey-Duresses: The Silent Jewel of the Portfolio

In a portfolio that includes Corton-Charlemagne, Meursault Perrières and Volnay Premier Cru, one might consider the Auxey-Duresses Rouge a supporting player. That would be a mistake.

Auxey-Duresses lies in the valley west of Meursault, on steep limestone hillsides with a northerly aspect that gives Pinot Noir a natural coolness and freshness. The soils are clay-limestone, complex and deep — ideal for a Pinot Noir that prizes elegance over power. In Coche-Dury’s hands, this “simple” village wine becomes a lesson in Burgundian precision.

The Auxey-Duresses Rouge is the wine you buy when you want to drink Coche-Dury without depending on the secondary market. It is the wine that sommeliers worldwide recommend when someone asks: “What is the Coche-Dury signature?” The answer is in this bottle. Complete, clear and undeniable.

Champagne Brut 2013, Dom Pérignon: The Last October Harvest

The 2013 vintage is described in some circles as "the last pre-climate change vintage" — a turning point in the history of Champagne. After a cold, wet winter and a very rainy spring, an exceptionally hot and sunny summer — the sunniest on record in the region — rescued the vintage and transformed it into something exceptional. 2013 was the last October harvest in the region, and the grapes' long hang-time translated to brilliant complexity — nature's patience as winemaker. Vinous considers 2013 the finest Champagne vintage of the decade, and Dom Pérignon produced a bottle that has left critics around the world in awe.

What's it Like?

In the glass, it shows a luminous pale gold with an exceptionally fine, persistent mousse. The nose reveals a delicate bouquet of eucalyptus, mint, vetiver, mirabelle plum, apricot and orange blossom. On the palate, flavours of citrus, vegetal facets, spices and a saline hint follow with remarkable precision. Chef de Cave Vincent Chaperon uses the French word "épure" to describe this wine: from the attack to the finish, a simple and precise line — like a classical marble sculpture. The texture is silky and creamy, the acidity vivid and precise. A Champagne that is both immediately accessible and profoundly deep — a rare combination.

An exceptional celebration. Its elegant, precise profile pairs beautifully with a classic Lobster Thermidor, scallops with truffle and brown butter, a refined sashimi, or a well-aged Comté — but it is equally unforgettable as a pure aperitif when the occasion demands nothing less.

The Critics Agree...

James Suckling awarded 98 points, calling it "driven and serious — so sleek and sophisticated. Elegant. Yet long and powerful, with a sharp minerality." Wine Spectator gave 96 points for its "crystalline structure" and "long, creamy, mineral-laced finish." The Wine Advocate awarded 95 points, calling it "a lovely wine defined by the long, cool growing season." Decanter named it "among the finest Dom Pérignon releases of recent times."

Champagne Brut, Dom Pérignon 2013 ( ohne Box )

Dom Pérignon: The Monk Who Made the World Drink Stars

There are Champagne brands. And then there is Dom Pérignon — not merely a brand, but an idea, a promise, almost a religion of pleasure. A story that began over 350 years ago and has never felt more relevant.

The year is 1668. A young Benedictine monk named Pierre Pérignon is appointed cellar master at the Abbey of Hautvillers, perched above the Marne valley in the heart of Champagne. He is 28 years old and almost blind — but he smells and tastes like no one else.

Over the next four decades, this man would change winemaking forever.

The Monk and the Stars

Dom Pérignon developed methods that still form the foundation of Champagne today: the precise assemblage of different grape varieties and terroirs into a harmonious whole, the use of thicker English glass bottles, the cork stopper in place of the then-common wax plug. He understood that Champagne was not a happy accident but a precise, planned act of creation.

When he first saw the bubbles in his glass — the result of an unexpected second fermentation — he is said to have called to his fellow monks: “Come quickly, I am drinking stars!” Whether the story is literally true or not is irrelevant. It is too true not to be true.

The Concept: Only in Exceptional Years

Dom Pérignon is not produced every year. That is the first, decisive difference from almost every other Champagne house. If the year is not sufficient — no Dom Pérignon. There was no Dom Pérignon produced in 2014 or 2016. This is not modesty. It is obsession.

Every Dom Pérignon ages for a minimum of eight years in the cellars before release. Not because the law demands it — the legal minimum would be 15 months. But because Vincent Chaperon, the current Chef de Cave, does not compromise.

The Three Plénitudes: Wine as a Living Being

Dom Pérignon believes that every vintage experiences three peaks — three “Plénitudes”: the first flowering in youth, a second unfolding after one to two decades, and a third depth after 30 years and more. It is a philosophy that treats wine as a living entity — one that breathes, evolves, matures, and never ceases to surprise.

Hautvillers: The Sacred Mountain of Champagne

The grapes for Dom Pérignon come exclusively from the 17 Grands Crus of Champagne and the Premier Cru of Hautvillers — the very vineyard Dom Pérignon himself cultivated. No purchases from outside this elite. No compromise on origin. The assemblage philosophy is radical: Chaperon describes it as the search for “harmony between the nature of the year and the signature of Dom Pérignon.”

2013: The Legacy of Two Chefs de Cave

The 2013 marks a historic moment: it is one of the last vintages still co-shaped by Richard Geoffroy, the legendary Chef de Cave from 1990 to 2018 — and the first that his successor Vincent Chaperon brought to commercial maturity. Chaperon describes the quality of the 2013 as “elegance — very simple, caressing and silky.” Two visions, one wine. A vintage that writes history.

The 2019 vintage in the Côte d'Or is considered one of the greatest gifts Burgundy has received in decades — warm, dry, perfectly ripe, with a freshness and energy that such vintages so often lack. For Mounir Saouma, the Lebanese founder of micro-négociant house Lucien Le Moine, it was the ideal vintage for the Premier Cru climat Les Épenots in Pommard: one of the noblest terroirs in the entire Côte de Beaune, directly bordering Beaune, on clay-limestone soil with a perfect south-east exposition. Lucien Le Moine never purchases more than one or two barrels per climat — making this bottle one of the rarest and most sought-after Pommards in existence.

What's it Like?

In the glass, it shows a deep ruby with violet reflections. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a silky, opulent texture and a core of dark, juicy fruit. The tannins are firm, fine and fully ripe — the classic Pommard backbone, but with an elegance and purity that is unmistakably Lucien Le Moine. The finish is long, mineral and saline.

Lucien Le Moine enjoys cult status among collectors worldwide. The Pommard Les Épenots consistently features in the Top 10 highest-rated Épenots wines across all producers. Rotem and Mounir Saouma's wines are described by critics as "Burgundy's most perfumed and downright sexy bottles" — a claim this 2019 confirms with authority.

Lucien Le Moine: A Monk, a Cellar, an Obsession

There are houses in Burgundy with centuries of history. And then there is Lucien Le Moine — founded in 1999 by a Lebanese man who learned to make wine in a monastery in the Middle East. A story you could not invent.

Mounir Saouma grew up in a farming family in Lebanon. In the late 1980s, he visited a Trappist monastery in the Middle East — and stayed. Not for a week. For a long time. He worked in the monastery vineyards, learned to vinify, to ferment, to understand what wine truly is. It was not a training course. It was a calling.

The Name: A Double Bow

“Lucien Le Moine” is not a name chosen by chance. It is a carefully crafted tribute: Mounir means “light” in Arabic — the French equivalent is Lucien. Le Moine means “the monk” — a nod to the years in the monastery that started everything. The name therefore literally means: “The Enlightened Monk.” One could not be more precise.

The Concept: Haute Couture in Barrel Form

After the monastery, Mounir studied oenology in Montpellier, then spent six years working in Burgundy, other French regions and California. In 1999, together with his wife Rotem Brakin — an agronomist from a cheesemaking family and prize-winner of the French Academy of Agriculture — he founded a small négociant house in Beaune.

The philosophy: never more than 100 barrels per year. Exclusively Premier Cru and Grand Cru. Each climat vinified separately, often just a single barrel. Mounir describes his own dream as building “a library of the greatest terroirs of the Côte d’Or — every vintage.” Up to 75 different wines per vintage, some produced in quantities of just 300 bottles.

The Method: Patience as Philosophy

Lucien Le Moine is not a domaine in the classical sense. Mounir purchases wines after fermentation from selected growers — but the heart of his work lies in the cellar. He calls it “élevage”: the art of ageing. Extended time on the lees, no racking, no fining, no filtration. Sometimes up to 60 months in cool cellars, fermenting slowly and naturally, protected by the CO2 produced by the yeasts themselves.

His colleagues call him mad. His clients call him a genius.

Les Épenots: The Jewel of Pommard

The climat Les Épenots sits in the north-east of Pommard, directly bordering Beaune, in sight of the Grand Cru road. The soil is rich in clay and limestone marl — heavy, complex, deep. A parcel that even filed a request for reclassification to Grand Cru status in 2012. That says everything.

Les Épenots produces a Pommard that embodies both the heart of the appellation and its most elegant face. Powerful yes — but never coarse. Tannic yes — but never dry. It is the Pommard for people who do not usually like Pommard.

In Mounir Saouma’s hands, a great terroir becomes something singular. A wine you drink and understand: why a Lebanese man once stayed in a monastery — to learn exactly this.

Belle Epoque 2015 Champagne, Perriet Jouet - Instantly recognizable by the Japanese anemones painted on the bottle—a design created by Art Nouveau master Emile Gallé in 1902—the Belle Epoque is Perrier-Jouët's prestige cuvée. The 2015 vintage was marked by a warm and sunny summer, yet cellar master Séverine Frerson managed to capture an astonishing level of freshness. It is a Champagne that embodies the house's signature style: floral, intricate, and supremely elegant.

What's it Like?

It is a masterclass in delicacy. It pours a luminous pale gold. The nose is a fragrant spring garden, dominated by white flowers like linden and hawthorn, before giving way to white peach, crisp pear, and a hint of grapefruit. On the palate, the high percentage of Grand Cru Chardonnay (50%) provides a silken, graceful texture, while the Pinot Noir brings a subtle, structured backbone. It finishes with a precise, chalky minerality and a touch of toasted almond.

Perfect For

A highly romantic celebration or a sophisticated toast. It is exquisite on its own but shines when paired with delicate seafood, such as a scallop carpaccio with citrus, sole meunière, or a light white peach dessert.

The Critics Agree...

Critics admire the 2015 for its ability to balance the warmth of the vintage with the house's classic finesse. James Suckling praised its "creamy texture" and "luminous acidity," while others note its "crystalline purity" and "charming floral aromatics."

Perrier-Jouët: A Botanical Romance

In the illustrious history of Champagne, few houses were born directly from a love story. Maison Perrier-Jouët was founded in 1811, precisely one year after the marriage of Pierre-Nicolas Perrier, a cork manufacturer, and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, the cultured daughter of a Calvados producer. Together in Épernay, they combined his profound understanding of terroir with her passion for botany and the arts. This dual fascination with nature and culture became the unbreakable foundation of the house.

The Birth of Brut Perrier-Jouët is a true pioneer. In the 19th century, Champagne was heavily sweetened, often resembling a dessert syrup more than a refreshing wine. In 1856, responding to the tastes of their British clientele, the house made the radical decision to drastically reduce the sugar dosage in their export cuvée. This daring move created one of the world’s very first “Brut” Champagnes. By stripping away the sugar, they forced themselves to rely entirely on the pristine quality of their grapes, particularly the Chardonnay from their prized Grand Cru vineyards in Cramant.

The Art Nouveau Legacy The soul of Perrier-Jouët is deeply intertwined with the Art Nouveau movement, which celebrated the flowing, organic lines of nature. In 1902, the renowned artist and master glassmaker Emile Gallé designed a bottle adorned with a spray of white Japanese anemones. Though the design lay dormant in the cellars for decades, it was resurrected in the 1960s for the launch of the prestige cuvée, “Belle Epoque.” Today, under the guidance of Séverine Frerson—the first female cellar master in the Maison’s history—Perrier-Jouët remains a symbol of floral elegance, artistic refinement, and uncompromising craftsmanship.

Weingut Arndt Köbelin: Tradition and Innovation in the Heart of Kaiserstuhl

Nestled in the picturesque town of Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl, one of Germany’s sunniest regions, Weingut Arndt Köbelin has established itself as a beacon of quality and passion in winemaking. Founded in 2005 by Arndt and Monika Köbelin, the winery seamlessly blends time-honored traditions with modern techniques to produce exceptional wines that truly reflect the unique terroir of the Kaiserstuhl region.

History and Philosophy

Arndt Köbelin’s journey into viticulture began at the young age of 16. With formal training as a winemaker and cellar master, he honed his skills working with renowned vintners both in Germany and abroad, including stints in New Zealand and Burgundy. In 2005, Arndt and his wife Monika returned to their roots, transforming the family’s grape-growing business into their own winery at the base of the Eichstetten vineyards. Their philosophy centers on sustainable viticulture, meticulous vineyard management, and minimal intervention in the cellar, aiming to craft wines that authentically express the character of their origin.

Vineyards and Terroir

The Kaiserstuhl region, characterized by its volcanic soils and favorable microclimate, provides an ideal environment for viticulture. Weingut Arndt Köbelin cultivates primarily Burgundy varieties, with a focus on Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The combination of mineral-rich soils and abundant sunshine allows the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness, resulting in wines with pronounced fruit flavors, balanced acidity, and a distinct mineral undertone.

Winemaking Practices

At Weingut Arndt Köbelin, the winemaking process begins with the careful selection of fully ripe, healthy grapes. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure that only the best fruit makes it to the cellar. After a gentle pressing, the must undergoes a slow fermentation using natural yeasts indigenous to the vineyard. This approach preserves the unique characteristics of each varietal and vineyard site. Extended contact with the lees enhances the wines’ complexity and mouthfeel, while the careful use of oak aging, particularly for the red wines, adds depth and structure without overshadowing the fruit.

Wine Portfolio

The winery’s portfolio showcases a range of wines that cater to diverse palates:

Gutsweine (Estate Wines): These fresh and fruity Kabinett wines offer a clear varietal character and are perfect for everyday enjoyment.

Selektionsweine (Selection Wines): Crafted from carefully selected grapes, these wines exhibit greater intensity, complexity, and aging potential.

Reserve Wines: Produced from exceptional vineyard sites like the “Kaltenbrunnen,” these wines represent the pinnacle of the winery’s production, offering depth, elegance, and a true sense of place.

Distillates and Other Products

Beyond their acclaimed wines, Weingut Arndt Köbelin also produces a selection of high-quality distillates. Utilizing fruits from their own orchards, they craft spirits that capture the essence of the region’s produce. Additionally, their non-alcoholic Apfelsecco, made from handpicked apples from traditional orchards, offers a refreshing alternative for all ages.

Recognition and Awards

The dedication to quality and authenticity has not gone unnoticed. Weingut Arndt Köbelin has received accolades from esteemed wine guides and critics:

VINUM Weinguide 2024: Praised for a clear vision and consistently high-quality wines, with estate wines being particularly noted for their value and appeal.

Eichelmann Wine Guide 2024: Awarded 4 stars as an “Excellent Winery,” highlighting the impressive quality across their wine collection.

Visiting the Winery

Visitors to Weingut Arndt Köbelin are welcomed to explore their modern yet inviting tasting room, where they can experience the full range of wines and distillates. The winery offers insights into their sustainable practices and winemaking philosophy, providing a comprehensive understanding of what makes their wines truly special.

Weingut Arndt Köbelin stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. With a deep respect for the land and a commitment to excellence, Arndt and Monika Köbelin have cultivated a winery that not only produces outstanding wines but also embodies the rich cultural heritage of the Kaiserstuhl region.

Cuvée DD 2023 Domaine Tissot Jura Magnum 1.5L - This is a wine with a beautiful story. From the legendary Stéphane Tissot, one of the Jura's most important winemakers, 'Cuvée DD' is a personal homage to his father and grandfather. It’s a vibrant, biodynamic field blend from old vines they planted together, all bottled in a festive magnum. This is pure, soulful, and captivating Jura.

What's it Like?

This is a bright, energetic, and incredibly aromatic red. It pours a pale, translucent ruby and bursts from the glass with a perfume of wild strawberry, sour cherry, and redcurrant, with underlying notes of damp earth, rose petals, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it's light-bodied but intensely flavorful, with a zesty, almost electric acidity and fine-grained, subtle tannins. It’s a pure, juicy, and utterly delicious wine.

Perfect For

A fantastic food wine for a wide range of dishes, pairing with charcuterie, roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, or even a simple piece of grilled salmon. It's also perfect for when you want to explore the exciting, vibrant reds of the Jura.

A Wine with a Story...

This wine is a tribute. The 'DD' stands for Daniel and Désiré, Stéphane Tissot's father and grandfather. It comes from a single parcel of old vines that the three generations worked together. It's a field blend of Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau, co-fermented to create a seamless and authentic expression of their family's land. It is a true taste of heritage, farmed biodynamically with the utmost respect for nature.

Cuvée DD 2023 Domaine Tissot Jura Magnum 1.5L

Domaine André et Mireille Tissot, situated in Montigny-les-Arsures near Arbois in France’s Jura region, is a benchmark estate renowned for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and the authentic expression of Jura’s diverse terroirs. Established in 1962 by André and Mireille Tissot, the domaine has flourished under the stewardship of their son, Stéphane Tissot, who took the helm in 1989.

Vineyard Practices

Spanning approximately 35 hectares, the vineyards of Domaine Tissot are cultivated using biodynamic principles, a practice that has been certified by Demeter. This approach eschews synthetic chemicals, focusing instead on natural preparations and lunar cycles to enhance soil vitality and vine health. The result is grapes that truly reflect their origin, leading to wines of remarkable purity and character.

Terroir and Grape Varieties

The estate’s vineyards are planted on a mosaic of soils, including clay, marl, and limestone, each contributing unique attributes to the wines. Domaine Tissot cultivates a range of grape varieties traditional to the Jura:

White Varieties: Chardonnay and Savagnin

Red Varieties: Pinot Noir, Trousseau, and Poulsard

This diversity allows for a broad spectrum of wines that capture the essence of their specific sites.

Winemaking Philosophy

Stéphane Tissot is a fervent advocate for minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the intrinsic qualities of the grapes and their terroirs to shine. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the use of sulfur is judicious, often minimal or none at all. The domaine produces an impressive array of approximately 28 different cuvées, each representing a distinct parcel or vineyard, underscoring the region’s rich diversity.

Wine Portfolio

Domaine Tissot’s extensive portfolio encompasses various styles, including:

Sparkling Wines: Crémant du Jura, crafted from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau, offering vibrant acidity and complexity.

White Wines: Chardonnay and Savagnin expressions, ranging from fresh and mineral-driven to the traditional oxidative styles emblematic of the Jura.

Red Wines: Single-varietal bottlings and blends of Pinot Noir, Trousseau, and Poulsard, showcasing the region’s potential for elegant and expressive reds.

Vin Jaune: The iconic “yellow wine” of the Jura, made exclusively from Savagnin and aged under a veil of yeast, resulting in a distinctive nutty and savory profile.

Notable Cuvées

Crémant du Jura Extra Brut Rosé: A blend of Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau, this sparkling rosé exhibits flavors of tart strawberries, white cherry, tangerine, and rose petals, leading to a zesty, lees-influenced finish.

“DD” Red Blend: An homage to Stéphane’s father, André (“DD”), this cuvée combines Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir in equal measure. An extended, gentle maceration imparts a tender yet robust structure with broad tannins, creating a delightful and unexpected texture for such a light wine.

Champagne La Grande Année 2015 Bollinger

Bollinger: A Timeless Symbol of Excellence in Champagne

A Rich Heritage Since 1829

This is one of the most prestigious and historic Champagne houses, known for its powerful, complex, and age-worthy wines. Established in 1829 in Aÿ, one of Champagne’s most revered Grand Cru villages, it has remained independently family-owned for nearly two centuries. Founded by Jacques Bollinger, Paul Renaudin, and Joseph Bollinger, the house quickly gained recognition for its meticulous craftsmanship and deep commitment to quality.

A defining moment in Bollinger’s history came in the 20th century under the leadership of Madame Lily Bollinger, who ran the house from 1941 to 1971. She was instrumental in preserving the estate’s high standards and famously declared:
“I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory.”

Her passion and dedication solidified the reputation as a Champagne house of unparalleled excellence.

The Bollinger Vineyards: A Unique Terroir

Unlike many other Champagne houses that rely heavily on sourced grapes, Bollinger is one of the few maisons that owns and controls the majority of its vineyards—an impressive 178 hectares across Aÿ, Avenay, Louvois, Tauxières, Verzenay, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.

Over 85% of the vineyards are classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru, ensuring an exceptional level of quality. The house is also one of the last to maintain a monopole vineyard, the legendary Clos Saint-Jacques, which produces some of its rarest Champagnes.

Bollinger is known for its commitment to the Pinot Noir grape, which forms the backbone of its signature style. The high proportion of Pinot Noir (around 60-70%) in its blends contributes to the richness, depth, and longevity of its wines.

Winemaking Philosophy: Precision and Tradition

The approach to winemaking is deeply traditional yet innovative, resulting in wines of remarkable structure and complexity. The house is known for several distinctive techniques:

Fermentation in Oak Barrels – Bollinger is one of the few Champagne houses that still ferments a significant portion of its wines in old oak barrels, adding richness, depth, and a signature oxidative character.

Aged Reserve Wines – The house keeps an extensive collection of reserve wines, stored in magnums under cork, which are later blended into its non-vintage cuvées to ensure consistency and complexity.

Extended Lees Aging – Bollinger ages its Champagnes for significantly longer than the legal minimum, enhancing their texture, depth, and aromatic intensity.

Hand Riddling and Disgorgement – While many producers have transitioned to mechanized processes, Bollinger maintains traditional hand riddling for its top cuvées.

The Champagne Collection

Bollinger produces a range of exceptional Champagnes, each with its own unique character:

Special Cuvée – The flagship non-vintage blend, predominantly Pinot Noir, known for its richness, complexity, and fine bubbles.

La Grande Année – A vintage Champagne aged in oak barrels, produced only in the best years, with extraordinary depth and aging potential.

R.D. (Recently Disgorged) – Aged on lees for an extended period and disgorged just before release, delivering unparalleled complexity and freshness.

PN Series – A Pinot Noir-driven Champagne showcasing a single-cru expression from a specific year.

Vieilles Vignes Françaises – A rare and legendary Blanc de Noirs from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines, among the most exclusive Champagnes in the world.

Rosé Bollinger – A structured yet elegant rosé Champagne, made using the saignée method with the addition of Pinot Noir from La Côte aux Enfants.

A Legacy of Prestige and Recognition

The champagne has long been associated with luxury, tradition, and prestige, becoming the official Champagne of James Bond since Live and Let Die (1973). The house has also been awarded the prestigious Royal Warrant by the British monarchy, a distinction it has held since 1884.

With its unwavering commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and terroir, Bollinger continues to produce some of the finest and most distinguished Champagnes in the world, making it a favorite among collectors, connoisseurs, and those who appreciate timeless excellence.
