Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2022, Domaine Coche-Dury: The Most Modest Masterpiece of the Greatest Estate in the Côte de Beaune

Robert Parker once called Jean-François Coche-Dury "one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth." No other estate in the Côte de Beaune — with the possible exception of Leroy and Romanée-Conti — is spoken of with such reverence. And yet: their most accessible red wine comes not from Meursault, not from Volnay, but from the modest Auxey-Duresses — a small valley west of Meursault, whose steep limestone hillsides and cool microclimate give the Pinot Noir a freshness and minerality unthinkable in warmer sites. The 2022 vintage in the Côte de Beaune was warm and sunny — one of the greatest in recent years, with ripe, intense fruit and a structure that left experts in awe. In Coche-Dury's hands, this became an Auxey-Duresses Rouge of exceptional elegance, depth and complexity — a red wine that reveals the secret of why this estate has remained unmatched for decades.

What's it Like?

In the glass, a luminous, medium ruby with violet reflections — young, vivid, expressive. The nose is seductive: ripe red cherries, raspberry, fresh strawberry, delicate violets and rose blossom, underpinned by a hint of forest floor, spice and a delicate mineral depth from the limestone terroir of Auxey-Duresses. On the palate, medium-bodied, silky and precise — the unmistakable Coche-Dury signature. The tannins are fine and fully integrated, the acidity fresh and lively, the finish long, aromatic and minerally persistent. A Pinot Noir of Burgundian purity, simultaneously accessible and profound.

An elegant Burgundy dinner. Its precise, fresh profile pairs beautifully with a herb-butter roasted Poulet de Bresse, a beef fillet with truffle sauce, duck breast with cherries, or a well-aged Époisses de Bourgogne.

The Critics Agree...

Coche-Dury is the second most searched estate in Auxey-Duresses on Wine-Searcher worldwide. The Auxey-Duresses Rouge is among the most coveted entry-level wines in all of Burgundy — not because it is inexpensive, but because it occupies a level in the estate's quality hierarchy that no other producer can offer at this tier. Connoisseurs describe it as "subtle and delicate, perfect for extended cellaring" — carrying the same signature as the estate's great Premier Crus.

Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2022, Domaine Coche-Dury

Domaine Coche-Dury: The Estate That Needs No Explanation — and Deserves One Anyway

There are estates in Burgundy that are great because their terroirs are great. And then there is Domaine Coche-Dury — an estate that makes its terroirs great.

Jasper Morris, one of the world’s foremost Burgundy experts, put it perfectly: “You might expect to be able to put a finger on why the wines are so good. Are the yields low? Not exceptionally. Is there some wizardry during the vinification or élevage? Sometimes I think it is just that Jean-François Coche-Dury has green fingers.”

The Marriage That Created a Legend

The story of Coche-Dury begins in 1973 — with a marriage. Jean-François Coche, son of an old winemaking family from Meursault, marries Odile Dury. The Dury family brings vineyards. The Coche family brings generations of winemaking knowledge. Together, they create an estate that on paper appears modest — 9 hectares spread across six communes — and in the bottle is incomprehensibly great.

Robert Parker discovered the estate in the late 1980s and was immediately staggered. His evaluations of the Meursault Perrières and the Corton-Charlemagne set new standards. Within a few years, Coche-Dury was known worldwide — and the bottles were rarer than ever.

Jean-François: The Winemaker with Green Fingers

Jean-François Coche-Dury is not a theorist. He is a farmer — in the best sense of the word. He spent decades understanding every metre of his vineyards: which soil gives what to which vine, how each selection responds, how much sun each slope receives. No clones planted — a rarity in Burgundy, where most producers long ago switched to selected clones. Massal selections that preserve the genetic diversity of the old vines.

In the cellar: long fermentation in oak barrels with spontaneous yeasts, frequent battonage, 15 to 22 months of ageing, no filtration. The proportion of new oak varies — up to 50% for the great whites in certain years — but always deployed so that the wood serves rather than dominates.

Raphaël: The Second Generation Without Fear

In 2010, Jean-François handed the estate to his son Raphaël — a winemaker who grew up in his father’s vineyards and knows the most difficult task in the wine world: taking on a perfect legacy.

Raphaël has not tried to copy his father or surpass him. He has continued the estate with the same principles — respect for the terroir, patience in the cellar, precision in every decision — but with his own, modern sensibility. Connoisseurs are unanimous: Raphaël has maintained the level. Some say he has even slightly raised it.

Auxey-Duresses: The Silent Jewel of the Portfolio

In a portfolio that includes Corton-Charlemagne, Meursault Perrières and Volnay Premier Cru, one might consider the Auxey-Duresses Rouge a supporting player. That would be a mistake.

Auxey-Duresses lies in the valley west of Meursault, on steep limestone hillsides with a northerly aspect that gives Pinot Noir a natural coolness and freshness. The soils are clay-limestone, complex and deep — ideal for a Pinot Noir that prizes elegance over power. In Coche-Dury’s hands, this “simple” village wine becomes a lesson in Burgundian precision.

The Auxey-Duresses Rouge is the wine you buy when you want to drink Coche-Dury without depending on the secondary market. It is the wine that sommeliers worldwide recommend when someone asks: “What is the Coche-Dury signature?” The answer is in this bottle. Complete, clear and undeniable.

Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2012, Château de Fonsalette: The Côtes du Rhône That Surpasses Everything

Directly outside the boundaries of Châteauneuf-du-Pape — literally a stone's throw from the mythical Château Rayas — lies an estate that has fascinated and bewildered the wine world for decades. Château de Fonsalette is a Côtes du Rhône. On paper. In the bottle, it is something else entirely. The 2012 vintage in the southern Rhône was warm and dry, with excellent natural ripeness and a freshness that lent the vintage genuine elegance. For Emmanuel Reynaud, who vinifies Fonsalette with the same hands, the same philosophy and the same cellar as Rayas, 2012 is a vintage that perfectly captures the classic Fonsalette signature: a rich nose of ripe red fruits, flowers and spices, a palate of exceptional silkiness and finesse. A wine to which its appellation label is entirely indifferent.

What's it Like?

In the glass, a luminous, medium-deep ruby. The nose is a captivating bouquet: ripe red fruits, cherry, raspberry, rose, wilted violets, licorice and a delicate hint of garrigue and spice. With air, it opens further — moist tobacco, forest floor, a nuance of leather and truffle. On the palate, exceptionally supple and silky, with a freshness and vitality that makes it electrifying despite its age. The tannins are fully integrated, the finish long, complex and aromatically persistent. A wine that unfolds in the glass like a flower — and that presents itself after two hours of decanting in a completely different way than at the first pour.

A classic southern French feast. Its floral, earthy profile with delicate spice calls for a herb-roasted leg of lamb à la Provençale, a charcoal-grilled entrecôte with herb butter, a wild boar ragù with black olives, or a well-aged goat's cheese such as Pélardon or Picodon.

The Critics Agree...

The Fonsalette Rouge 2012 was awarded 93 points by Wine-Searcher critics — exceptional for a Côtes du Rhône and proof of this wine's extraordinary character. Connoisseurs describe it as "nearly parallel in quality to Rayas itself — beyond the quality of any Côtes du Rhône before or since." Jancis Robinson praised the Cinsault component as "very pretty, floral and spicy." A wine that makes you forget its appellation status entirely.

Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2012, Château de Fonsalette

Château de Fonsalette: The Secret on the Other Side of the Boundary

Boundaries in wine are strange things. One metre of difference in location can be the difference between a simple table wine and a legendary Grand Cru — not because of the soil, not because of the grape, but because of a line that humans drew on a map.

Château de Fonsalette lives on the wrong side of that line. And makes of it one of the greatest estates in France.

1945: The Purchase That Started Everything

Louis Reynaud, grandfather of the current guardian Emmanuel Reynaud, acquired Fonsalette in 1945 — shortly after the end of the Second World War, in a France slowly rebuilding itself. The estate lies near Lagarde-Paréol, in the Côtes du Rhône area, directly at the northern edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. 120 hectares in total: forests, olive groves, agricultural land — and just 12 hectares of vines. This modesty of surface is not a weakness. It is intention.

The soils are complex: sand, clay, limestone — similar but not identical to the famous gravel soils of Rayas. Old-vine Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah for the reds; Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Marsanne for the whites. All harvested by hand. All vinified with the same methods as Rayas. All aged in the same cellar.

One Cellar. Three Legends.

This is the key to understanding Fonsalette: the wine is not vinified at Fonsalette itself. It travels to Emmanuel Reynaud — to Château Rayas. There, in the same mythical cellar, under the same direction, with the same old foudres and the same philosophy, the Fonsalette Rouge is born alongside the Rayas, alongside the Pignan. No temperature control. No filtration. Spontaneous fermentation. Long ageing.

What distinguishes Fonsalette from Rayas is not the method. It is the terroir — the other side of the boundary. And that makes it one of the most fascinating wines in France: a wine one does not drink because it is cheaper than Rayas. One drinks it because it is different. More deeply rooted in Cinsault and its floral lightness. Broader in its Grenache base. More accessible, but no less complex.

Cinsault: The Forgotten Pearl

In a world that worships Grenache and Syrah, Cinsault is the forgotten grape. Too light, some say. Too little colour, too little extraction. And yet: in Fonsalette, the Cinsault — up to 35% of the blend — gives the wine something Grenache alone cannot provide. Flowers. Rose. Violet. An airy lightness that keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy despite its depth. It is this lightness that distinguishes Fonsalette from every other southern Rhône wine — that Burgundian bearing that runs through every vintage.

The Price of Integrity

Fonsalette is one of the most sought-after Côtes du Rhône in the world — and one of the most expensive. Bottles from the great vintages change hands for more than 500 CHF on the secondary market. Not because there was a plan to create a luxury Côtes du Rhône. But because Emmanuel Reynaud simply does the only thing he knows: wine of absolute integrity, regardless of what is written on the label.

That is the paradox of Fonsalette. The label says Côtes du Rhône. The wine says: I am what I am. And that is enough.

The Antinori family has been making wine since 1385 — six centuries, 26 generations. And yet with the Tignanello 2018, they have created something exceptional even by their own standards. The 2018 vintage was cool and long, the ripening period slow and precise — ideal for the Sangiovese vines of the Tenuta Tignanello, between the Greve and Pesa river valleys, at 350–400 metres altitude in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. The result: a Tignanello of breathtaking purity and elegance, unanimously acclaimed by the world's most important critics as one of the three greatest Tignanellos ever produced. In a 1.5-litre Magnum, it ages more slowly and more deeply — the ultimate format for a wine that has time on its side.

The nose is an elegant symphony: ripe cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant, cherry blossom and rose, underpinned by fine tobacco, camphor, mocha and dark spices. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with a vibrancy and tension that is simply electrifying. The tannins are silky, perfectly ripe — carrying the fruit without dominating it. The finish is of remarkable length and precision, with notes of leather, cedarwood and licorice.

Some wines are good. Some wines are great. And then there are wines that change history. Tignanello belongs to the third category.

To understand why, you need to go back to 1971. Italy. The land of rules. Wine laws dictate what must be vinified in which barrel, with which grape, for how long. Sangiovese is king — but it must be blended with white grapes, as the law demands. Those who ignore it lose their DOC status. Those who go too far technically produce nothing more than a simple table wine.

Piero Antinori decided to go too far.

The Scandal That Changed Everything

In 1971, the then-winemaker Giacomo Tachis — together with Piero Antinori — created a wine that broke every rule: no white grapes, but Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside the Sangiovese. Ageing in small French barriques rather than traditional large barrels. No DOC title — this wine goes by the humble name of “Vino da Tavola.” Table wine. But what a table wine.

The reaction of the wine world: shock. Outrage. And then — admiration.

Within a few years, Tignanello became the blueprint for an entire movement. The world began to speak of “Super Tuscans.” Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto — they all owe their existence to the courage Piero Antinori showed in 1971.

The Estate: A Vineyard as a Classroom

The Tenuta Tignanello sits between the valleys of the Greve and the Pesa, in the absolute heart of the Chianti Classico zone. 130 hectares of vineyards at 350 to 400 metres altitude — high enough to escape the Tuscan heat, close enough to benefit from the valley’s warmth. The terroir is complex: reddish soils poor in iron, rich in limestone and schist, which give the Sangiovese its characteristic freshness and tension.

No other property of the Antinori family expresses their philosophy as precisely as the Tenuta Tignanello: tradition and modernity united in a single glass.

26 Generations. One Obsession.

The Antinori family has been in wine since 1385 — 26 generations without interruption. They are members of the Primum Familiae Vini, the most exclusive wine club in the world, with only 12 member families — Mouton-Rothschild, Drouhin, Egon Müller, Pol Roger, Vega Sicilia. Deservedly so.

Piero Antinori, today Honorary President, led the estate for decades with a philosophy that was simple but radical: quality before tradition, terroir before convention, courage before comfort.

Tignanello Today: A Wine of Extremes

Tignanello is the 13th most searched wine on wine-searcher.com worldwide. Only one single Italian wine surpasses it in search volume — Sassicaia. It is a permanent resident on the Liv-ex Power 100, the stock market index of the wine world.

And yet: Tignanello is not an investment object. It is an object of pleasure — a wine that drinks like a grand bourgeois from another era, while simultaneously embodying the most modern winemaking philosophy. Piero Antinori once said that the best Tignanello was always the next one. The 2018 proves he is still right.

Since 1549, the Perrin family has cultivated an unmatched terroir at the northern tip of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation — large rolled pebbles on the surface, sand, clay and limestone beneath, farmed organically since the 1960s. Château de Beaucastel is the only estate in the appellation to grow all 13 permitted grape varieties. The 2007 vintage is considered one of the greatest in the domaine's long history: scorching hot days and cool nights produced grapes of exceptional structure, fruit density and balance — a vintage that seems immune to time.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007, Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel: Where the History of Wine Really Begins

Some estates have history. And then there is Château de Beaucastel — a place where history is literally beneath your feet, buried in the famous galets roulés of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, deposited there by the Rhône river across millennia.

The year is 1549. Europe is in the midst of the Renaissance. Michelangelo is still alive. And the Perrin family lays the first stone of what will become one of the world’s greatest wine estates. Five centuries later, four generations deep, brothers Marc, Thomas, Pierre and Mathieu Perrin are doing exactly what their ancestors always did: listening to the land.

The Terroir: A Geology Lesson in One Sip

To understand Beaucastel, you must first understand its soil. The famous galets roulés — those fist-sized, river-polished stones — blanket the surface like a natural battery. During the day, they absorb the heat of the Provençal sun. At night, they release it slowly back to the vines, like a stone hot water bottle. The result? A ripeness that comes from within, not forced by the sun.

Beneath: sand, clay, limestone. Deep enough that the roots of the old vines — some over 80 years old — must dig into the earth’s interior to find water and minerals. That struggle is not a weakness. It is the soul of the wine.

The Philosophy: 13 Grape Varieties, One Vision

In a world where winemakers increasingly specialise in one or two grape varieties, Beaucastel does the opposite. All 13 varieties permitted by the appellation are cultivated here — organically farmed since the 1960s, long before organic became a trend. Grenache and Mourvèdre form the backbone, but it is the quiet supporting cast — Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin — that give the wine its inimitable complexity.

Marc Perrin puts it this way: a single-variety wine is a monologue. Beaucastel is a chorus.

Mourvèdre: The Secret Weapon

While most Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers treat Grenache as their undisputed king, Beaucastel has always given Mourvèdre an extraordinary role — up to 30% of the blend. This decision is radical and polarising. Mourvèdre is demanding: it ripens late, needs heat, gives little away. But when it works, it delivers something no other grape can: that dark, meaty, almost animal depth that sets a Beaucastel apart from everything else. Truffle. Leather. Earth after rain. That is Mourvèdre. That is Beaucastel.

A Wine That Waits — and Rewards

Beaucastel is not a wine for the impatient. In its youth it can seem closed, almost sullen. But those who wait — truly wait — will be rewarded with something that has become rare in modern winemaking: genuine maturity. Genuine complexity. A wine that does not merely taste, but tells a story.

The 2007 is the perfect illustration. After nearly two decades, it has reached exactly the point Robert Parker predicted: complete harmony, explosive on the nose, silky on the palate, with a finish that refuses to end.

Some wines are drunk. Beaucastel is experienced.

Alion 1999, Bodegas y Vinedos - Born from the legendary Vega Sicilia family, Alión was created to showcase a more modern, fruit-forward expression of the Ribera del Duero. The 1999 vintage is a testament to the incredible aging potential of pure Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). At over two decades old, this wine has shed its youthful oak dominance to reveal a masterpiece of maturity, elegance, and profound depth.

What's it Like?

It pours a deep, mature ruby with garnet edges. The nose is a captivating, evolved bouquet of dried blackberries, plum compote, cured tobacco, espresso, and worn leather. On the palate, it is velvety and medium-to-full-bodied. The once-grippy tannins have resolved into a silky texture, carrying flavors of dark chocolate, savory earth, and dried spices into a remarkably long, persistent finish.

Perfect For

A sophisticated evening with serious wine lovers. Its savory, mature profile makes it the ultimate companion for slow-roasted lamb shoulder, a rich oxtail stew, or a selection of aged, hard sheep's milk cheeses like Manchego.

The Critics Agree...

Critics have celebrated the 1999 vintage for its structure and longevity. Reviews from the era praised its "opulent dark fruit" and "toasty French oak," predicting a long life ahead. Today, experts note that it has entered its peak drinking window, offering a seamless balance of tertiary complexity and lingering power.

Bodegas y Viñedos Alión: The Modern Ribera del Duero

Founded in 1991 by the Álvarez family (the legendary owners of Vega Sicilia), Alión was born from a desire to create a modern, more accessible expression of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). While Vega Sicilia is deeply steeped in tradition and legendary for its extended aging in mixed oak, Alión was designed to reflect the contemporary tastes of the 21st century. It focuses entirely on pure fruit expression and the exclusive use of new French oak barrels.

A Terroir of Distinction Located just 15 kilometers from its famous parent winery, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, the Alión vineyards benefit from extreme climate conditions. The scorching hot days and freezing nights promote the development of thick skins and intense concentration in the grapes. The winery operates with surgical precision, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to ensure that the raw, sun-baked power of the fruit is perfectly balanced by an elegant, polished structure.

The Philosophy Alión is emphatically not a “second wine” to Vega Sicilia; it is an entirely independent entity with its own distinct personality and dedicated winery. The philosophy is singular: one wine, one grape variety, and a commitment to precision. Today, Alión stands as an absolute benchmark for modern Spanish winemaking, proving that forward-thinking innovation and deep-rooted heritage can coexist brilliantly.

Ornellaia 1996, Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia - Ornellaia is one of the founding fathers of the "Super Tuscan" movement. Born in the coastal region of Bolgheri, this wine proved that Italy could produce Bordeaux-style blends that rival the greatest estates in the world. The 1996 vintage is a classicist's dream. While often overshadowed by the warmer and flashier 1997, 1996 offered a cooler, longer growing season. This resulted in a wine of profound elegance, firm structure, and incredible longevity. Now fully mature, it is a magnificent piece of Italian winemaking history.

What's it Like?

It pours a deep, mature garnet with a brick rim. The nose is a complex, fully evolved bouquet of dried black cherries, cedar wood, old leather, sweet tobacco, and crushed graphite. On the palate, the youthful fruit has gracefully transformed into savory, tertiary flavors. It is medium-to-full-bodied, with tannins that have melted into a silky texture, driven by a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine incredibly fresh despite its age. The finish is long, earthy, and aristocratic.

Perfect For

A milestone celebration or an intimate dinner with fellow wine aficionados. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats, specifically a classic Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, or aged Pecorino cheese.

Ornellaia 1996, Tenuta Dell’Ornellaia

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia: The Super Tuscan Dream

In the early 1980s, the coastal region of Bolgheri in Tuscany was largely a swampy, forgotten landscape, famous only for peaches and strawberries. But Marchese Lodovico Antinori saw something else. Inspired by the success of his cousin’s Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia) and his own travels to California and Bordeaux, he founded Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in 1981. His vision was bold: to plant classic Bordeaux grape varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—on the Tuscan coast and create wines that could rival the absolute best in the world.

A Unique Coastal Terroir The magic of Ornellaia lies in its unique geography. Situated close to the Mediterranean Sea, the vineyards benefit from constant cooling sea breezes that moderate the intense summer heat. The soils are a complex, ancient mosaic of marine, alluvial, and volcanic elements. This diversity allows each grape variety to be planted exactly where it will thrive. The result is a perfect balance between the ripe, opulent fruit character of the Tuscan sun and the structured, elegant backbone of the Bordeaux varieties.

The Pursuit of Excellence From the very beginning, Ornellaia operated on a philosophy of uncompromising quality. This means severe pruning, manicured vineyards, and harvesting block by block only when the grapes reach perfect phenolic maturity. Today, the estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, another legendary Tuscan wine dynasty, who have fiercely protected Lodovico’s original vision. Ornellaia is not just a winery; it is a testament to human intuition and the absolute pinnacle of the Super Tuscan movement.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017, Château de Beaucastel - Beaucastel is a titan of the Rhône Valley, famous for being one of the few estates to still grow and blend all 13 permitted grape varieties of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The 2017 vintage was defined by a hot, dry summer that resulted in very low yields. However, Beaucastel's secret weapon—an unusually high percentage of late-ripening Mourvèdre (roughly 30%)—thrived in the heat. This created a wine of monumental concentration and structure, avoiding any over-ripe sweetness and delivering pure, classic terroir.

What's it Like?

Deep, rich, and intensely aromatic. The nose is a complex, savory perfume of blackberry liqueur, roasted meats, black truffle, dried garrigue, and licorice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, yet it retains a remarkable sense of elegance and lift. The tannins are velvety but firm, framing a core of dark fruit and earthy spices that lead into a remarkably long, savory finish.

Perfect For

A luxurious autumnal or winter dinner. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb with rosemary, game meats like venison, or a rich, earthy mushroom stew.

Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered and historic estates in the Rhône Valley, particularly celebrated for its exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. With a legacy spanning centuries and a deep commitment to tradition, innovation, and organic viticulture, Beaucastel has solidified its reputation as one of the greatest producers in France.

A Rich History Rooted in Tradition

The origins of Château de Beaucastel date back to the 16th century, but its modern legacy began in 1909 when Pierre Tramier acquired the estate and passed it on to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin. Since then, the Perrin family has guided the domaine with a meticulous approach to winemaking, upholding a philosophy of balance, respect for nature, and the expression of terroir. Today, the estate is managed by the fifth generation of the Perrin family, who continue to uphold the traditions that have made Beaucastel legendary.

Exceptional Terroir and Organic Farming

Located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel benefits from an extraordinary terroir of rolled pebbles (galets roulés) on a clay-limestone subsoil. These stones help retain heat during the day and release it at night, ensuring optimal grape ripening while also promoting deep root growth.

Beaucastel was a pioneer in organic and biodynamic farming, long before these practices became widespread. Since the 1950s, no chemical treatments have been used in the vineyard, preserving the natural balance of the soil and vines. This commitment to sustainability results in wines that are pure, expressive, and true to their origin.

The Uniqueness of Beaucastel’s Blends

One of Château de Beaucastel’s defining characteristics is its use of all 13 permitted grape varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an approach that few other estates follow. This diverse blend allows for complexity, longevity, and an unmistakable identity in each vintage.

Grenache provides ripe fruit, body, and warmth.

Mourvèdre, a hallmark of Beaucastel, adds structure, depth, and remarkable aging potential.

Syrah contributes spice, color, and power.

Counoise and Cinsault bring freshness and elegance.

Other traditional varieties, such as Vaccarèse, Muscardin, and Terret Noir, contribute to the complexity and balance of the wine.

A key element in Beaucastel’s style is the use of Mourvèdre in high proportions, often making up 30% of the blend. This allows the wines to age gracefully for decades, developing deep, gamey, and truffle-like aromas over time.

Winemaking Philosophy – Precision and Patience

The winemaking process at Château de Beaucastel is as meticulous as its vineyard management. Each grape variety is vinified separately to preserve its individual character. The red wines undergo long macerations to extract maximum depth and complexity, followed by aging in large oak foudres, which allow for slow evolution while maintaining purity of fruit.

For the Château de Beaucastel Blanc, the estate produces an exquisite white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, primarily from Roussanne, which contributes elegance and aging potential. This rare and sought-after wine is known for its opulent texture and layered aromatics.

Aging Potential and Global Acclaim

Château de Beaucastel’s wines are renowned for their incredible aging potential. Even in their youth, they offer immense power and depth, but with time, they evolve into wines of remarkable complexity, developing notes of dried herbs, black truffle, and garrigue. Some of the greatest vintages have aged gracefully for over 30 years.

Critics consistently praise Beaucastel’s wines, awarding them some of the highest scores in Châteauneuf-du-Pape history:

Château de Beaucastel: The Quintessential Châteauneuf-du-Pape

More than just a wine, Château de Beaucastel represents the heart and soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is a benchmark for Rhône Valley excellence, offering a seamless blend of power, finesse, and terroir-driven authenticity. Whether enjoyed young for its vibrant fruit and spice or cellared for decades to unveil its full complexity, a bottle of Beaucastel is an unforgettable experience for any wine lover.

Tignanello 2009, Marchese Antinori - While Tignanello is known for its structure and age-ability, the 2009 vintage stands out for its sheer hedonism. Born from a warm and sunny growing season in Tuscany, this wine is a departure from the austere, structured styles of cooler years. It is Tignanello with its jacket off—open, generous, and incredibly inviting. It is a wine that prioritized pleasure from day one and is now singing in a perfect window of maturity.

What's it Like?

This is a rich, opulent, and velvety wine. The heat of the 2009 vintage softened the Sangiovese’s natural acidity, resulting in a luscious mouthfeel. The nose is a dense bouquet of ripe black cherries, blackberry jam, and dried herbs, enveloped in sweet notes of milk chocolate, vanilla, and liquorice. On the palate, the tannins are remarkably smooth and polished, making the wine feel like liquid silk. It finishes with a warm, spicy glow that lingers beautifully.

Perfect For

A comforting, high-end dinner on a cold evening. Because of its ripe fruit and softer structure, it pairs exceptionally well with dishes that have a touch of sweetness or richness, such as slow-roasted pork belly, duck with cherry sauce, or a classic Osso Buco.

The Critics Agree...

Critics have long praised the 2009 for its "sexiness" and "immediate appeal." Antonio Galloni noted its "radiance and warmth," describing it as a "flashy, exuberant Tignanello" loaded with "dark red fruit, smoke, licorice and tobacco." It is often cited as one of the most accessible and enjoyable vintages of the decade.

Tenuta di Trinoro 2019, 1,5 L Magnum -This is one of the most exotic and coveted cult wines in all of Italy. Created by the late, visionary Andrea Franchetti in the remote Val d'Orcia, Tenuta di Trinoro is a Bordeaux blend that tastes like nothing else on earth. The 2019 vintage is spectacular—a year of perfect balance that allowed Franchetti to craft a wine of immense power and surprising freshness. Presented in a rare Magnum format within its original wooden case, this is a collector's holy grail meant to last a lifetime.

What's it Like?

This wine is a sensory explosion. It is incredibly concentrated and rich, yet never heavy. The nose is a complex, exotic perfume of blueberry jam, cassis, incense, graphite, and mint. On the palate, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc (60%) shines through, offering a silky, velvety texture and deep, savory spice notes. It fills the mouth with layers of dark fruit and crushed rocks, finishing with a long, vibrating energy that is the signature of this wild, high-altitude terroir.

Perfect For

The ultimate gift for a serious wine investor or the centerpiece of a decadent dinner party. This wine demands rich food: think roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, wild boar stew, or truffles.

Critics have showered the 2019 with praise, recognizing it as one of the estate's finest achievements.

Tenuta di Trinoro 2019, 1,5 L Magnum

If you drive south through Tuscany, past the manicured hills of Chianti and Montalcino, you eventually reach a place that feels like the end of the world. This is the Val d’Orcia—a wild, lunar landscape of blue clay and crumbling limestone. For centuries, this was sheep country, devoid of vineyards. That is, until Andrea Franchetti arrived.

Franchetti, who passed away in 2021, was one of the wine world’s true eccentrics and visionaries. Related to the Rothschild family and the artist Cy Twombly, he lived a bohemian life before deciding, in the 1990s, to plant a vineyard in this remote “no man’s land.” Everyone thought he was crazy. The climate was extreme, the isolation total.

But Franchetti saw something no one else did. He saw similarities to the great soils of Saint-Émilion. He planted Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot—at incredibly high densities, forcing the vines to fight for survival. His philosophy was simple but brutal: very low yields and extreme ripeness. He would often harvest weeks later than his neighbors, waiting for the grapes to shrivel slightly, concentrating their sugars and flavors.

The result was an overnight sensation. Tenuta di Trinoro became an instant cult classic, proving that this wild corner of Tuscany could produce wines of shocking power, exotic perfume, and longevity. Today, the estate stands as a lonely, magnificent monument to one man’s daring vision to create a Grand Cru where there was once only wilderness.

Château Hosanna 1999 - This bottle represents a significant moment in Pomerol history: 1999 was the very first vintage of "Château Hosanna." Created by the legendary Christian Moueix (the owner of Pétrus) from the best parcels of the former Château Certan-Giraud, this wine was designed from day one to be a superstar. Located right next to Pétrus and Lafleur, it sits on some of the finest red clay and gravel in the world. This debut vintage is now fully mature, offering a rare chance to taste the birth of an icon.

What's it Like?

This is classic, mature Pomerol at its finest. It has shed its youthful fruit to reveal a complex, savory soul. Expect a decadent nose of black truffles, forest floor, cedar, and sweet dried plums, with a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is incredibly soft and silky. The tannins have completely melted away, leaving a texture like cashmere. It is not a loud wine, but a gentle, elegant, and persistent one that speaks of its noble terroir.

Perfect For

A quiet, appreciative tasting with close friends who understand the history of Bordeaux. It pairs beautifully with simple, high-quality dishes like roast squab, mushrooms on toast, or a truffle pasta.

Critics recognized the potential of this estate immediately. Upon release, Robert Parker called it "a star of the vintage," praising its "rich, concentrated" style and notes of "mocha, caramel, and black cherry jam." Today, it is celebrated for its elegance and the successful integration of its high Cabernet Franc percentage (30%), which gives it a floral, spicy lift similar to Cheval Blanc.

Château Hosanna 1999

In the fiercely competitive world of Bordeaux, it is almost impossible to create a new “legend” overnight. Yet, that is exactly what Christian Moueix—the man behind Château Pétrus—did with Château Hosanna.

The story begins in 1999. The Moueix family purchased the historic Château Certan-Giraud, a property located on the prestigious Pomerol plateau. Christian Moueix, with his incredible eye for terroir, realized that the estate was actually two distinct vineyards masked as one. He sold off the lesser parcels and kept only the “heart”: a small, jewel-like plot of old vines situated directly between Château Pétrus, Château Lafleur, and Vieux Château Certan.

He renamed this prime plot Château Hosanna.

The terroir here is arguably the best in the world for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It features the same blue clay found at Pétrus (which gives power and depth) mixed with the red gravel found at Lafleur (which gives elegance and aromatics). But the secret weapon of Hosanna is its magnificent old-vine Cabernet Franc. These vines, some of which date back to the 1950s, give the wine a distinct floral complexity and finesse that often draws comparisons to the legendary Château Cheval Blanc.

Today, Hosanna is often called the “feminine” counterpart to the “masculine” Château Trotanoy (another Moueix property). It is a wine of grace, silky texture, and profound depth, proving that while the name may be young, the soul of the vineyard is ancient and noble.
