Château Batailley: A Legacy of Excellence

Château Batailley, situated in the heart of Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Médoc region, is a distinguished Fifth Growth estate renowned for its exceptional wines. The estate’s name, “Batailley,” is believed to derive from a battle that occurred on the property during the Hundred Years’ War in the 14th century.

Historical Background

The first records of viticulture on the Château Batailley estate date back to the 16th century. In the 18th century, the Saint-Martin family owned the property. In 1791, the two sisters sold their shares to Guillaume Pécholier, a Bordeaux wine merchant.

In 1816, Daniel Guestier of Barton & Guestier acquired the estate, investing significantly in its development. Under his stewardship, Château Batailley gained prominence, culminating in its classification as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification.

In 1924, the Borie brothers, co-owners of Maison Borie-Manoux, purchased Château Batailley. The estate remains under the ownership of the Borie-Castéja family, who also manage other esteemed properties such as Château Lynch-Moussas and Château Trotte Vieille.

Vineyard and Winemaking

The estate spans approximately 57 hectares, with a vineyard composition of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is around 40 years.

Château Batailley produces about 22,000 cases of its Grand Vin annually. The wine undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion being new each year. This meticulous process imparts the wine with its characteristic structure and complexity.

Tasting Notes and Recognition

Château Batailley wines are celebrated for their depth, elegance, and aging potential. The 2009 vintage, for example, received a 94-point rating from Wine Enthusiast, highlighting its smooth black currant fruit, great density, and powerful structure.

Visiting Château Batailley

The estate offers guided tours and tastings, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore its rich history and winemaking process. The 12-acre (5-hectare) gardens, originally designed by Napoleon III’s landscape architect, Barillet-Deschamps, in 1850, are a notable feature of the property.
