Syrah 2015, Fattoria Le Pupille - While Elisabetta Geppetti is famous for her Super Tuscan "Saffredi" and her Morellino di Scansano, her pure Syrah is an insider's secret that rivals the best in Italy. Grown in the warm, sun-drenched soils of the Maremma coast, this wine combines the varietal’s spicy character with a distinct Mediterranean generosity. The 2015 vintage was exceptional in Tuscany—warm and balanced—resulting in a Syrah of profound depth and richness that is drinking beautifully right now.

What's it Like?

This is a wild, hedonistic wine. The nose is an intense explosion of cracked black pepper, cured meat, blackberries, and a hint of dark chocolate, lifted by notes of Mediterranean scrub (macchia) and juniper. On the palate, it is full-bodied and enveloping. The warmth of the 2015 vintage gives it a sweet fruit core, but the grape's natural savory, meaty character keeps it grounded. The tannins are velvety and polished, leading to a long, spicy finish.

Perfect For

A rustic, hearty feast. It screams for wild game, specifically the local Wild Boar (Cinghiale) stew of the Maremma. It also pairs magnificently with grilled lamb chops, peppery steaks, or aged Pecorino cheese.

The Critics Agree...

Critics often praise Le Pupille's Syrah for its unique ability to be unmistakably Syrah yet unmistakably Tuscan. For the 2015 vintage, reviews highlight the "ripe, fleshy fruit" and the "peppery spice," noting that while it has the volume of a New World wine, it retains an "Italian soul" of savory earthiness.

The Vineyard That Defined a Region

Saffredi is more than just a vineyard; it is the heart of Fattoria Le Pupille and the birthplace of the Maremma’s first iconic Super Tuscan. Its story is one of intuition, daring, and a deep love for the land, single-handedly proving that this wild, coastal part of Tuscany could produce wines to rival the best in the world.

The vineyard is named in a heartfelt tribute to Fredi, the mentor who inspired proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti’s lifelong passion for wine. In the 1980s, when Elisabetta was just in her early twenties, Maremma was a region known for rustic wines, not world-class Bordeaux blends. Against all advice, she had a powerful intuition that this land was special. With the guidance of the legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis, she planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in this specific 14-hectare plot.

The site itself is unique. Located in Pereta at an altitude of 280 meters, the vines are perfectly positioned to capture the intense Tuscan sun. The soil is a poor, stony mix of sandstone, marl, and iron-rich minerals, forcing the vines to struggle and dig deep for nutrients. This struggle, combined with cooling breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, is the secret to Saffredi’s magic. It allows the grapes to achieve immense ripeness and power while retaining a vibrant, energetic freshness and a complex herbal character.

The first vintage was 1987, and it immediately announced the arrival of a new star in the Super Tuscan firmament. Today, Saffredi is a testament to Elisabetta Geppetti’s pioneering vision. It transformed the perception of Maremma forever, creating a benchmark for the entire region and securing its place as one of Italy’s most celebrated and iconic wines.

Saffredi 2002, Fattoria Le Pupille, Magnum 1.5 L - This is the flagship, the icon, and the powerhouse of the Maremma coast. Saffredi is one of the original Super Tuscans that put this sunny coastal region on the world map. The 2022 vintage is a stunning, near-perfect expression of this estate, a wine of immense depth, power, and surprising elegance that has received massive acclaim.

What's it Like?

This is a wine of incredible, multi-layered depth. Imagine a profound nose of dark berries, cherries, and wild herbs like eucalyptus, lavender, and sage. On the palate, it's full-bodied and powerful, but with a new level of elegance and freshness. It’s an intense, juicy mouthful of precisely defined red and black fruits, all framed by super-fine tannins. The finish is energetic and incredibly long.

Perfect For

A spectacular gift for a lover of bold Italian wines, cellaring for a milestone celebration, or pairing with a magnificent, dry-aged Bistecca alla Fiorentina.

The Pros Agree...

The critics have been blown away by this vintage, calling it a new benchmark and showering it with near-perfect scores (99 JS, 98 RP, 98 Decanter). One called it “a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit” with an “energetic finish.” Another hailed it as “a stunner” with an “intense and juicy mouthful of precisely wrought red and black berries.”
