Yet, it is its modern identity as a pioneer of organic and sustainable viticulture that truly sets it apart. A History Forged in Quality and Vision

The estate’s roots trace back to the 15th century when it was known as the Maison Noble du Bayle. Its modern history and name began in 1766 when the property was acquired by the Guiraud family, who passionately dedicated the next 80 years to establishing its winemaking prowess. Their efforts were rewarded in 1855 when the château was officially recognized as a First Growth (Premier Cru Classé), cementing its place among the elite of Bordeaux.

After passing through several hands, a new chapter for Château Guiraud began in 2006.

The estate was purchased by a consortium of four passionate wine professionals: automotive magnate Robert Peugeot, and three esteemed Bordeaux winemakers—Olivier Bernard of Domaine de Chevalier, Stephan Von Neipperg of Château Canon La Gaffelière, and Xavier Planty, who had already been managing the estate for decades. This new team ushered in an era of renewed focus, investment, and a profound commitment to expressing the purest essence of the Guiraud terroir.

A Unique Terroir and a Commitment to Nature

Château Guiraud’s vineyard is one of the largest in the appellation, with 100 hectares of vines situated on a high gravelly plateau within the commune of Sauternes. This privileged location is key to the wine’s character.

Soil: The terroir is a complex mosaic of 80% gravelly soils mixed with sand and a subsoil of deep, translucent clay. This combination provides excellent drainage—crucial in a region reliant on autumn humidity—while retaining enough moisture to nourish the vines. The gravel contributes to the wine’s power and structure, while the clay adds richness.
Grape Varieties: Guiraud is distinguished by its high proportion of 35% Sauvignon Blanc, planted alongside 65% Sémillon. This significant percentage of Sauvignon Blanc is a cornerstone of the Guiraud style, imparting exceptional freshness, aromatic complexity, and a vibrant acidity that perfectly balances the rich, honeyed character of the botrytized Sémillon.
A Pioneer in Organic Viticulture: Château Guiraud’s most defining feature is its unwavering commitment to nature. The journey towards sustainability began in 1996 with the implementation of sustainable practices and the creation of a «conservatory» to study over 100 ancient grape varietals. This deep respect for biodiversity culminated in 2011, when Château Guiraud became the first Premier Cru Classé of 1855 to achieve official organic certification.
This philosophy ensures that every bottle is not just a great wine, but a pure and authentic expression of its living terroir.

The Guiraud Style: A Symphony of Contrasts

The winemaking at Château Guiraud is meticulous, from the vineyard to the bottle. The harvest is performed entirely by hand, requiring between 2 and 6 successive passes through the vines to select only the grapes perfectly concentrated by the «noble rot,» Botrytis cinerea.

In the cellar, fermentation takes place in oak barrels, with around 50% new oak used for the Grand Vin. The wine is then aged for 18 to 24 months in these barrels, allowing it to develop its signature complexity.

The resulting wine is a dazzling display of contrasts. It marries the luscious opulence of Sauternes—with notes of candied apricot, mango, quince, and rich honey—with an electrifying freshness and aromatic lift from the Sauvignon Blanc.

Signature notes often include saffron, ginger, bitter orange marmalade, and a distinct minerality.
