Hidden in the hills of the Val d’Arno di Sopra, just outside the traditional borders of Chianti Classico, lies an estate that has quietly redefined what is possible in Tuscany: Tenuta Petrolo. While the region is steeped in history—the Grand Duke of Tuscany identified this specific area as a superior wine zone as far back as 1716—the modern legend of Petrolo is a story of artistic vision and obsession with quality.

The estate is owned by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, but the true turning point came under the stewardship of Luca Sanjust. Luca is not a typical farmer; he is a trained art historian and a painter. When he took over the estate, he approached winemaking not as agriculture, but as art. He saw the potential in the estate’s unique soil—a rocky, schist-based clay known as galestro—and realized it was perfectly suited to producing wines of immense structure and elegance, much like the great crus of Pomerol in Bordeaux.

In the 1990s, at a time when many were prioritizing quantity, Sanjust made the radical decision to slash yields and focus on absolute concentration. He identified a specific parcel of Merlot that was performing miraculously and created “Galatrona,” the wine that would soon be known as the “Pétrus of Italy.”

But Petrolo is not just about Merlot. It is a celebration of the land.
