Château Mouton Rothschild 1988, Pauillac, France,
Château Mouton Rothschild 1988 – AC Pauillac 1er Cru classé, 750 ml – This is a monumental and classic expression of Pauillac from one of the world’s greatest estates. Hailing from the excellent and structured 1988 vintage, this Mouton Rothschild is a world away from the delicate ’87. It is a powerful, savory, and muscular wine, now fully mature but still possessing a firm structure. This is a serious, sophisticated, and age-worthy First Growth.
What’s it Like?
This is classic, old-school Pauillac at its finest. Imagine a profound and sophisticated nose of blackcurrant (cassis), graphite (pencil lead), cedar, and new saddle leather. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied and still quite muscular, with a powerful frame of fine-grained, resolved tannins and crisp acidity. The flavors are savory and complex, with a touch of austerity on the long, classic finish. This is a wine of great balance and immense pedigree.
Perfect For
The serious Bordeaux connoisseur who loves classic, structured vintages, a magnificent pairing for a standing rib roast or a grilled côte de boeuf, or comparing with the 1989 and 1990 vintages to understand the character of this great trio of years.
A Collector’s Piece…
Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has commissioned a great artist to create an original artwork for each vintage label. The iconic 1988 label features a dynamic work by the legendary American pop artist Keith Haring, designed in his unmistakable graphic style. This bottle is a spectacular fusion of pop art and fine wine, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item.
