What’s it Like?

On the palate, the high percentage of Grand Cru Chardonnay (50%) provides a silken, graceful texture, while the Pinot Noir brings a subtle, structured backbone. Perrier-Jouët: A Botanical Romance

In the illustrious history of Champagne, few houses were born directly from a love story. Maison Perrier-Jouët was founded in 1811, precisely one year after the marriage of Pierre-Nicolas Perrier, a cork manufacturer, and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, the cultured daughter of a Calvados producer. Together in Épernay, they combined his profound understanding of terroir with her passion for botany and the arts. This dual fascination with nature and culture became the unbreakable foundation of the house.

The Birth of Brut Perrier-Jouët is a true pioneer. In the 19th century, Champagne was heavily sweetened, often resembling a dessert syrup more than a refreshing wine. In 1856, responding to the tastes of their British clientele, the house made the radical decision to drastically reduce the sugar dosage in their export cuvée. This daring move created one of the world’s very first “Brut” Champagnes. By stripping away the sugar, they forced themselves to rely entirely on the pristine quality of their grapes, particularly the Chardonnay from their prized Grand Cru vineyards in Cramant.

The Art Nouveau Legacy The soul of Perrier-Jouët is deeply intertwined with the Art Nouveau movement, which celebrated the flowing, organic lines of nature. In 1902, the renowned artist and master glassmaker Emile Gallé designed a bottle adorned with a spray of white Japanese anemones. Though the design lay dormant in the cellars for decades, it was resurrected in the 1960s for the launch of the prestige cuvée, “Belle Epoque.” Today, under the guidance of Séverine Frerson—the first female cellar master in the Maison’s history—Perrier-Jouët remains a symbol of floral elegance, artistic refinement, and uncompromising craftsmanship.
