More than just a Sauternes, Château Coutet is a quintessential Barsac, a wine that masterfully balances luscious sweetness with a signature nerve and acidity.

A Rich History Through the Centuries

The history of Château Coutet is one of the longest and most storied in the Bordeaux region. The estate’s origins can be traced back to the 13th century, making it one of the very first wine-producing estates in the entire Sauternes appellation. The name «Coutet» itself is derived from the Gascon word for «knife» (couteau), a fitting descriptor for the wine’s sharp, fresh, and incisive character that cuts through its inherent sweetness.

Initially constructed as a fortress in the 13th century, its military architecture is still visible today in its towers and walls. In 1643, Charles le Guérin, Lord of Coutet, made it a significant wine-producing property. Over the centuries, the estate has passed through the hands of prominent families, including a period where it was owned by the de Lur Saluces family, who also famously presided over the legendary Château d’Yquem.

The Terroir: The Secret of Barsac’s Freshness

The key to understanding Château Coutet lies in its exceptional terroir. Located in the commune of Barsac, the vineyard benefits from a unique geological and climatic environment.

Soil: The 38.5-hectare vineyard is planted on a thin layer of clay and alluvial soils resting upon a deep limestone subsoil. This limestone is crucial, as it imparts a powerful minerality, freshness, and vibrant acidity to the wines, creating the signature tension that distinguishes Barsac from other Sauternes.
Climate and Botrytis: Like all great Sauternes, Coutet’s magic comes from the «noble rot,» Botrytis Cinerea. The estate’s proximity to the Ciron river, a cool tributary of the warmer Garonne, creates perfect conditions for the development of this fungus. In the autumn, the meeting of the two rivers produces morning mists that envelop the vineyards, promoting the growth of botrytis. The sunny afternoons then dry the grapes, concentrating their sugars, acids, and flavors.
Grape Varieties: The vineyard is planted predominantly with 75% Sémillon, which provides richness, body, and honeyed notes. This is complemented by 23% Sauvignon Blanc, lending vital acidity and aromas of citrus and tropical fruit, and 2% Muscadelle for an extra layer of aromatic complexity.

Meticulous Winemaking and Style

The winemaking at Château Coutet is a process of extreme precision and patience, designed to preserve the fruit’s integrity and the terroir’s signature freshness.

The harvest is a labor-intensive affair, conducted entirely by hand in multiple passes, or tries, through the vineyard. The skilled pickers select only the individual grapes that have been perfectly affected by noble rot. This painstaking process can sometimes last for more than two months.

In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place in 100% new French oak barrels, a process that can last from three to four weeks. The wine is then aged in these barrels for 18 months, allowing it to develop complexity and integrate its flavors while retaining its vibrant character.
