Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots 2019, Lucien Le Moine: The Soul of Pommard — in a Monk’s Glass

The 2019 vintage in the Côte d’Or is considered one of the greatest gifts Burgundy has received in decades — warm, dry, perfectly ripe, with a freshness and energy that such vintages so often lack. For Mounir Saouma, the Lebanese founder of micro-négociant house Lucien Le Moine, it was the ideal vintage for the Premier Cru climat Les Épenots in Pommard: one of the noblest terroirs in the entire Côte de Beaune, directly bordering Beaune, on clay-limestone soil with a perfect south-east exposition. Lucien Le Moine never purchases more than one or two barrels per climat — making this bottle one of the rarest and most sought-after Pommards in existence.

What’s it Like?

In the glass, it shows a deep ruby with violet reflections. The nose is seductively complex: ripe black cherries, blackberry, blueberry, delicate violets and rose, underpinned by licorice, black pepper, forest floor and a touch of tobacco. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a silky, opulent texture and a core of dark, juicy fruit. The tannins are firm, fine and fully ripe — the classic Pommard backbone, but with an elegance and purity that is unmistakably Lucien Le Moine. The finish is long, mineral and saline.

Serving temperature: 16–17°C · Drinking window: 2025–2038, optimal from 2027

Perfect For

An elegant Burgundy dinner. Its powerful, earthy profile pairs beautifully with a beef Wellington, a roasted squab with figs and spices, a charcoal-grilled entrecôte, or a well-aged Époisses de Bourgogne.

The Critics Agree…
